Morocco overtakes South Africa as Africa's top carmaker

Morocco produced over one million vehicles in 2025, overtaking South Africa to become Africa's largest automotive manufacturer and car exporter. The sector spans more than 270 suppliers and is built around two anchors: Renault's plant in Tangier — a 300-hectare site employing thousands and producing over 300,000 vehicles a year — and Stellantis at Kenitra.

Stellantis announced a €1.2 billion investment in 2025 to expand Kenitra from 200,000 to 535,000 vehicles a year by 2030, adding electric and hybrid lines. Most output ships to Europe, much of it through Tangier Med.

For Gibraltar-linked firms in logistics, components and services, northern Morocco's industrial base is a growing opportunity.
